Even when he was fired, Willy said, "I was fired and I am looking for a little good news to tell your mother, because the woman has waited and suffered"(Miller 107). Willy always wants to act like him and his family aren’t struggling so he wants good news to make it seem like everything is good. This want is essentially just a ploy to make him feel better about himself, so once again Willy puts Linda second to his own needs, which is really the reason for all the waiting and suffering she had to do. He also does this to help himself believe that everything is okay and to make him feel better about himself. He treats Linda with no respect and makes her suffer towards the end of Willy’s life.…

Considered one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman can be seen as praise to a man who, while trying to bring his family into grace, falls in a tragic life. As Centola (25) says, “Miller’s play tells the story of a man who, on the verge of death, wants desperately to justify his life.” Willy is a complex and fascinating man who gradually destroyed himself with false hopes and beliefs. He is a tragic man who, in his whole life, has believed that he would die a rich and successful man. But, in fact, it is inevitable for him to fall down after years of disillusions.…

Often times people lie in order to appear greater than they truly are. They are too proud to accept the truths of their situation, surrendering to falsities and deceit. In Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, the concept of deception as a product of pride is explored through the lives of the Loman family and their struggle to accept reality. Through the internal battles of Linda, Biff, and Willy, it becomes apparent that succumbing to deception as a result of vanity, not only destroys the Loman family’s bond, but for Willy life itself. Linda Loman plays a crucial role in the theme of deception and pride.…

Willy Loman surrounds himself with many foils, all of whom motivate him unintentionally to take his own life. The ways foils influence daily lives are brought forward in the play as Miller skillfully creates a realistic situation where foils have a negative impact on the individual. Charley is one of Willy’s greatest foils, a man who is everything that Willy has not become. Though Will acts down on Charley multiple times and treats him much worse than a friend should, Charley not only remains kind and open to helping Willy, but maintains a successful and well-rounded character who achieves what Willy fails to achieve in his life. Even when Willy tells his family, “don’t talk to him” (Miller 89) and is constantly acting as though he is too busy for Charley, Charley remains the kind neighbour who does not treat Willy poorly.…

What is more, Willy is shown to be contradicting what he said to his sons, when he is talking to Linda about how slow business has been. “I don’t no the reason for it, but they just pass me by. I’m not noticed”(23). Willy claims he has friends and connections at one moment and in the next he is admitting that nobody notices him and passes by him like a normal person. This proves Willy guilty of the crime of deception, because he cannot even support his own words.…

In 1950, one in three women participated in the labor force. This statistic is startling because this implies women did not have major roles or have any responsibility. About seventy percent of men worked in the labor force, giving more pressure to the men to work and have their wives state home and be objects to them. In Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, Linda Loman, the main female character, feels the pressure of staying home and pleasing her husband, Willy Loman. Linda is Willy’s motivation to keep going and he does not realize that.…
