Lincoln: A Life of Purpose and Power, is a biography of the sixteenth president of the United States of America which was written by professor Richard Carwardine. Richard Carwardine is the president of the Corpus Christi College in Oxford. Often times Richard Carwardine is questioned about his knowledge on American politics and religion during the time of the Civil War, considering that he has lived his life outside of the United States. Despite the fact that Carwardine has lived in the United Kingdom his entire life, the professor actually has a very abundant amount of knowledge of United States politics and religion. His teachings and writings have received numerous rewards including; The Lincoln Prize Laureate in 2004, The Lincoln Diploma of Honor in 2013, and was inducted into The Order of Lincoln by the governor of Illinois in 2009. These awards are all a result of the top notch education …show more content…
In the very last paragraph of the text Carwardine says, “While he was certainly not reluctant to wield political authority, his practical policy grew from a strong sense of moral purpose, and his course as president was shaped not by impulsive, self aggrandizing action or self-righteousness, but by deep thought, breadth of vision, careful concern for consequences, and a remarkable lack of pride.” (Carwardine 321.) This example drawn from the text is an excellent representation of what Carwardine learned, and what he expects the reader to gain from the text. Overall, Lincoln: A Life of Purpose and Power, is a very interesting take on a biography that shines new light onto information that is not commonly known even in the United
