“John” is about Lil Wayne wanting to be remembered when he dies. He expresses his desire to be remembered like John Lennon, who is famous for co-founding the Beatles. Without listening to it, it would seem as if the two would not go well together, considering that “John” is aggressive while “My Tears Are Becoming A Sea” is melancholic. However, the combination is actually quite good, because the powerful instrumental complements the forceful lyrics. The meaning of “John” remains the same, despite the changed instrumental. No lyrics from M83’s song are in the mashup, so the message is unaltered. Similarly, a listener would not need to have listened to both of these songs on their own previously, because the theme of the song is the same.
