Millions of people all over the world suffer from various sleep disorders and it is estimated that there are about 70 million sufferers of insomnia. Sleep disorders are divided into three main categories; Lack of sleep - insomnia, Disturbed sleep- sleep apnea and Excessive sleep - Narcolepsy.

Insomnia is the most common and is caused by several factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, worry and other emotional and psychological problems. These disorders have a lot of negative effect on the human body and can lead to serious health problems like heart failure, loss of sex drive, accidents on the road or workplace, increased depression and aging of the skin.

There are several medical treatments used which may include sleeping pills and medications for any underlying health challenge. Other alternative treatments exist and these include dieting, exercise, yoga,massage, acupuncture, herbal remedies, etc. In this article, I shall be examining the use of light therapy for sleep disorders.

This will help in the development of a treatment plan and to help set the right intensity. From various studies carried out, it is recommended that the therapy is best done in the morning hours and many patients have reported improvements within 3 - 4 days.

There are also some risks and side effects involved in the use of light therapy. Some side effects that have been reported include headaches, tiredness, nausea, hyperactivity, skin and eye irritations. There are no known major side effects but patients who have issues with their eyes or are currently undergoing treatments for cancer, blood pressure, are advised to speak with their doctors first before undergoing any form of light therapy.
