Light In The Bible

In the Book of Genesis, the author introduces the importance of light and its role in God’s creation.This serves as a guide for the readers and also as a guide to further understanding light throughout other passages in the Bible. By looking at the emphasis on the separation between light and dark with the verb “separate”, we see that light always involves the removal of darkness and introduces the idea that no darkness can come in comparison to God’s light. This is important because throughout this book, light is good, and more importantly, God is light. Throughout the Bible, light is given a pivotal role and even holds some of the characteristics connected to God. When the verb “rule” is introduced into the passage, light essentially, becomes a protector, just like God. The light holds a higher status, than for instance, the moon, and serves as a defender or guide for the people, similarly to God. The author purposely chooses to place light at a higher level to show how valued and regarded it should be and is. In a sense, light is godly, therefore, God is light. The importance of light and its personification makes the light itself become God. This is clearly emphasized through active verbs, and figurative language. Although light isn’t portrayed to be fully divine, it symbolizes life, the presence of God in any given event. This light is a miraculous light, that in future passages foresees what will be good.
