Genetics is one of the possible major factors in a person’s lifestyle of being overweight. All people come in different shapes and sizes but in this case, some people are born bigger than what is known to be the average person. Parents have a great influence on their children and take on their parents habits. For example, a child whose parents are overweight or obese, consume foods that are high in calorie, and are inactive are more likely to become obese. However, if the family has good habits in physical activity and consumes healthy food, the possibility of their child becoming overweight or obese is decreased. For instance, leptin deficiency, which is known to be a genetic cause of obesity. Leptin is a type of hormone that is mainly produced in fat cells but is also produced in the placenta. Leptin regulates weight by informing the brain to eat less food when it knows that the storage of body fat is too high. If leptin is not informing the brain to eat less food or the body isn’t producing enough leptin, the control is gone, and obesity is taken place. The role of leptin is a replacement for the treatment of obesity (Balentine & Stoppler, 2014). Genes can also cause obesity in disorders including Bardet-Biedl syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive ciliopathy characterized by retinal dystrophy, obesity, renal dysfunction, learning difficulties, and many more (Bardet-Biedl Syndrome, 2007). Prader-Willi syndrome is a genetic condition that is complex (Cunha, 2014). Millington (2013) discovered that there is a small amount of genetic syndromes that are characterized by obesity, alone or in combination with other factors. Due to work schedules, people usually say that they don’t have time to exercise or be physically active in general because of they are already tired form the long work hours. Americans are exposed to huge food portions in fast food joints, restaurants, gas stations, supermarkets, movie theatres, and even in their own home. Some of the meals in certain places can probably feed two people. Consuming large portions of food means that too much of your energy is trapped (What Causes Overweight and Obesity?, 2012). Over time, continuing to eat large portions of food will cause weight gain if you’re not physically active. The lack of access to healthy foods is what drives people to go for junk food. Some people don 't live in neighborhoods or don’t have access to supermarkets that sell health food, such as organic fruits and vegetables. For other people, healthy foods that are sold in supermarkets are too expensive. In order to reduce the risk of becoming overweight, physical activity correlates with eating healthy.
