The purpose of this paper is to increase my observational skills, assessment skills, and my critical thinking skills so I may become an effective social worker. Rose is my seven-year-old granddaughter’s assistant soccer coach. Although I have been acquainted with Rose’s mother for several years I have not had much interaction with Rose, herself. I had the opportunity to observe Rose on two separate occasions, once at a soccer game and once at a pizza parlor, when she was accompanied by friends.

The school’s grassy area was set up with four small soccer fields that are meant to be used by the under 8 age division. The area was busy with parents and soccer players arriving and departing the fields. Rose stands six feet and ten inches tall and is slightly over weight. She is well groomed and wears her coaches uniform in a professional manner. She carries herself with head erect and walks with a purposeful stride. She greeted the children in the same respectful manner as she greeted the adults that she passed as she approached the field. Rose called the team name and the players gathered around her. I began to take note of Rose’s interactions with the eight-year-old players. Rose had the attention of every team member as she demonstrated a skill, then each girl took their turn trying the skill, when they were successful she gave them an enthusiastic high five, if one had difficulty she got down on their level, verbally encouraged them and demonstrated the skill again. If the player was still unsuccessful she gave that player an enthusiastic high five, then she and the players said, “good
