“ They looked into each cabin but they were all empty “ (110). With no food or water, how will they survive? “ From on the deck, she could hear the sound of the breeze through tattered sails “ (110). This tells us that Maya and her siblings are on a decent sized boat, but as the narrator says, “ Their parents were nowhere in sight “ (110). So not only do they lack of food and water, but they’re also alone without any adult watching them, not to mention, they have a baby sister that will need a lot of caring. “ The first thing that she noticed was that the GPS screen was black and lifeless. She pressed the reset button but nothing happened. And nothing happened when she pressed other buttons on it either. “ (111). This small quote gives us an idea that the boat isn’t just a boat, it most likely has beds, and some appliances that a normal home would have. It also tells us that the technology on the boat has stopped working, so they have no one they can contact to come rescue them.
In conclusion, the determination to survive comes with extreme decision making, and having hope at all times. Pi, Maya, and her siblings all have to make hard decisions in order to survive. “ Life of Pi “ and “ The Lost Island of Tamarind “ are perfect examples on how someone might react when they’re in a dangerous situation, although Pi and the characters from “ The Lost Island of Tamarind “
