This movie does not mock the life of Jesus but rather it pokes fun of a young man’s life (Brian), born on the same day as Jesus but in the stable next to him who just happens to be mistaken for the Messiah. In fact, Jesus in only shown twice; once in the manger as a baby and the second time from the very back of the crowd when they were gathered for the Sermon on the Mount. Palin and Python have argued that the film does not ridicule Jesus Christ, but in fact it indicts “close systems of thought.” The Life of Brian is not solely a religious satire, but more of a jab at English society and its politics transposed into the Biblical past. Eventually, Brian is mistaken as being Jesus and thus being the Messiah. He slowly catches the attention of a small crowd who follow him and his teachings. Ultimately, Brian is brought before Pilate and is then sentenced to crucifixion which happens to take place at a nonexclusive execution site a few blocks away from Calvary. Rather than the last six words Jesus says, Brian leads the whole crowd into song singing “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” The directors of this movie is trying to show that Jesus is human, that he could be an ordinary person. It contrasts what is said in the Bible simply because the Bible conveys that Jesus was “chosen,” only Jesus can do what he did.
