Prior to the beginning of the book, Bennie provides the reader with an overview of his life experiences when he was younger. He discussed how him and his sister constantly received attention and love from their family as they engaged in many fun activities such as Pee Wee football and YMCA basketball. Even at that time, his family made it a must to constantly make sure that they were always present, and was able to do their best at every activity in which they participated. Bennie’s parents wanted him and his sister to live the successful lives that they didn 't get the opportunity to live themselves. So they always made sure that they attended school every single day in addition to their constant involvement in the Parent Teacher Association in pursuit of always being aware of events. Although, the most effective and beneficial family member that Bennie had was his grandmother that he referred to as “Big Mama”. She always made sure that he was well taken care of, and would never let him miss a day of school unless he was extremely sick. This fact was displayed in the book when he stated that out of all of his 12 years in public school, he has only missed a total of 2 days. Bennie later decided to apply for Baylor University after learning that he had to attend a college in order to be able to achieve his goal. Unfortunately, he was not admitted due to his poor class rank and low test scores. The devastation and embarrassment that he experienced had led him to question if being a football player was truly his destiny. Later, Bennie discovered a community college named McLennan in Waco, Texas after hearing a customer’s conversation while bagging groceries. He constantly gave the decision some thought and finally decided to register for classes with Big Mama by his side. After being pulled out of the line by an advisor who was going to register him for his upcoming classes, Bennie was asked what he wanted to major in.
