Life before the Civil War revolved around agriculture and slavery. After the Reconstruction period, the South began to see it’s own Industry Revolution which spawned the term “New South” (Schultz, 2013). With the combination of an expanded railroad system and the advent of machinery, industries like tobacco and textiles flourished. Along with these newly created employment opportunities came competition for these jobs among blacks and whites. This caused increased interest in racial segregation in an attempt to keep blacks from acquiring these jobs.

Socially, the “New South” saw a whole host of new laws that prevented blacks from doing everything voting to riding in the front of public transportation (Schultz, 2013). African Americans
