Liberia was created in 1820 when the United States negotiated the rights for their freed slaves to settle there. In 1847 the country was declared a republic and operated with similar political institutions as the US. Liberia has many problems that have come from the two civil wars that took place between 1989 and 1996 and between 1999 and 2003, poor government and mismanagement. As the poorest country in Africa, its standards of living need to be improved drastically. Liberia’s political, economic and social factors prevent it from improving its standards of living.

Liberia is full of natural resources such as iron ore, timber, diamonds, gold and hydropower, but it is the poorest country in Africa. Its shaky economy heavily depends on assistance from foreign countries. The two civil wars and other factors have also destroyed much of Liberia’s economy. Many foreign and local businesses left the country during the civil wars and took capital and expertise with them. The instability in the government also continues to slow substantial investments and disrupts economic growth. This is very concerning to foreign investors because they don’t want to invest in a country that’s unstable. The corruption and lack of respect for the laws make Liberia an extremely unfriendly place to do business with. There are many resources in Liberia but mismanagement cause economic problems. For this country to succeed and get past the problems it’s facing from the civil wars, they need to set up a working education system and provide clean drinking water. The corruption issue in the government needs to be solved and the politicians doing it need to be punished. The country also needs to find a way to stop being so dependant on foreign countries assistance in their economy.
