Essay 2: Critical analysis.
Li Chonguye – a writer from Jiangsu University, China, wrote an essay called “A Caricature of an Ungrateful and Unfaithful wife” which is according to her; it’s a new interpretation and analysis of “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin (1984). This essay’s purpose was to seek for the story’s strengths and/or weaknesses. Chonguye used systematic format for her analysis and she followed the structure of the original story to ensure a progressive and logical discussion that Chonguye has created. The essay has three parts. It started with the introduction, which I think it is her “They say” part, where she put all of the previous studies about the story. Following up is the “I say” part, where she talked about her understanding and impression of the story, and, finally, a conclusion. Throughout the essay, Chonguye does make some interesting claims, some might be true, and some need to be reconsidered. For me, her idea about introduction was giving the background of the story and introducing the way she reached for the story. All of Chonguye’s works in the introduction was actually not followed the appropriate way to write an introduction. I think the author should focus on telling the reader about her thesis statement rather than showing a bunch of useless information.
Before the essay moves into the second part, the author states that “The story of an Hour has a surprise ending, which is characteristic of the short stories by Guy de Maupassant and O. Henry.” Once again, Chonguye confused the reader by giving a strange characteristic from nowhere and assuming the reader knows about this already. This is one of the several examples of a statement that is no more use than decrease the value of the sentence, and idea
