The antibiotic I’ve chosen to write about is Levofloxacin or more commonly known as Levaquin. Levaquin can also be named Quixin or Lquix. Levofloxin is a flucroquinolone which resides in the broad spectrum realm of antibiotics. Levofloxacin is used to treat many bacterial infection varying from the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder, and even the prostate. Levofloxacin can also be prescribed to individuals that have been subject to anthrax and or the plaque. More specifically and more commonly these diseases include UTI, Chlamydia, pneumonia, E.coli, strep, sinusitis, and bacterial eye infections such as pink eye. Levofloxacin is in the same family as the common drug Cipro, its proper name being Ciprofloxacin, this antibiotic is most commonly used to treat routine basic case of Urinary Tract Infections depending on the susceptibility and resistance …show more content…
The most common reported bacteria that has much resistance to Levaquin was the bacteria E. coli as well as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Levaquin is prescribed in heavy quantities from physician’s all over the world, in fact in 2010 Levaquin was the most prescribed and sold antibiotic then any and all others there are out in the pharmaceutical world. The common dosing of Levaquin is 250mg and 500mg, which is taken seven to fourteen days and usually BID (twice a day) but the quantity can vary depending on the milligrams prescribed. It also comes in ophthalmologic solution of 0.50% which treats a variety of eye infections. This particular medication has quite a bad reputation for its numerous side effects. These include but are not limited to headache, diarrhea, nausea, constipation, vomiting, vertigo, abdominal pain, trouble sleeping, itching, gas, rash, and vaginal discharge. Many lawsuits have come about with claims of nerve damage, tendon rupture and tears, and severe leg pain to name a few
