Doctors or scientists do not really know what causes leukemia. There is still no way to prevent the disease until the cause is found. ("Leukemia." Sick!) Younger people struggle more to get cured of cancer because their bodies are still growing and are weak. For example, Tad was not able to keep fighting cancer because he was a young eighth grader. Compared to older people they are stronger and their bodies have been through some little sicknesses like the flu. Acute leukemia is separated into two parts: Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) and Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). Both leukemias may be different in many ways, but have identical symptoms and can also be confused with other types of illnesses. (Leonard 15) It can cause intense symptoms and if they are not treated in the first stages, it can be rapidly fatal and incurable. (Leonard 15) " Patients with leukemia can experience thrombocytopenia (insufficient platelets), which causes internal bleeding and excessive bruising, anemia (insufficient erythrocytes), which results in weakness, pale complexion, and dizziness due to insufficient oxygen, and leukopenia (insufficient disease-fighting leukocytes), which allows recurrent fevers and infections." (Hammer) In the previous book, Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie, Jeffery was a four year old kid; kids can be active sometimes and in Jeffery's situation he was a little active and when he was he would sometimes hurt himself to the point he had to go to the hospital for internal bleeding and bruising.
