Letter To My Mentor Essay

I am writing this letter to express my unconditional support of Dr. Joanna Kaylor’s promotion to Associate Researcher, Step I at the Department of Ophthalmology, UCLA Stein Eye Institute. She is an exceptional young scientist and her appointment will certainly benefit the research program at your Institution.

My strong enthusiasm for the appointment of Dr. Kaylor stems first from her exceptional research accomplishments, and second from my personal impressions of her during our interactions at the biennial FASEB Scientific Research Conference on the Biology and Chemistry of Vision. Dr. Kaylor and I share common scientific interest in the fundamental chemical processes that govern the perception of light. This is the same topic on which I

Kaylor’s scientific achievements clearly demonstrates that she is an exceptionally talented, hard-working researcher who, in a relatively short period of time, became a leader in the field of vision research. Scientists can be classified into two categories: those on the frontier of discovery capable of opening new research avenues, and those who follow. Without doubt, Dr. Kaylor belongs to the first group. Her discoveries have converted the hypothetical concept of the cone-specific visual cycle into a testable hypothesis that if confirmed will revolutionize our thinking about cone physiology.

My personal interactions with Dr. Kaylor have been equally impressive. She is mature, independent in judgment, and a solid thinker, who is eager and fully capable of running her own research program. I have always found her to be enthusiastic about her work, collegial, generous with her knowledge, and enjoyable to talk with. She is kind and soft-spoken but always well worth listening to. I am confident that she will be an excellent colleague and her maturity and level-headedness will continue serving the Department

The eyes include the receptors for vision, which is generated in the retina. Processing pathways of eyes are like a camera, and what difference is people generate information on their sensitive retina, not camera films. Retina has lots of cells that cover the inside back of the eye. The image leaves on eyes by optic nerve; Cornea is responsible for focusing light to be processed; Fovea is the center of macula to sharpen our vision views for focusing; Iris regulates the amount of light, which along with the pupil; Lens focuses on light rays. Visual pigments have rods and cones,…

After many, many mutations, nature, and the conditions that early human ancestors had to live in, favoured better eyesight. In support of my argument that the eye is not intelligently designed, Professor Trevor D. Lamb goes on to say that “The vertebrate eye, far from being intelligently designed, contains numerous defects that attest to its evolutionary origin.” Some if these defects are: blood vessels across the surface of the retina, the optic nerve creating a blind spot, and an inside out retina. These defects further prove that the eye is not perfectly designed by a creator. Taking all this evidence in account, it provides logical and reasonable permission to label the argument from design outdated, incorrect and…

It is a pleasure to write this letter of recommendation in support of Lina Cavender’s application for Physician Assistant admission at your university. I am happy to provide my very highest recommendation for her application to your program. Being a physician and neuroscientist as well as the assistant instructor for several neuroscience courses and supervisor to Lina Cavender while a senior undergraduate student at Indiana University (Bloomington) majoring in Biology and Neuroscience, I have the opportunity to know her very well for last 4 years. During my years of training as a doctor and neuroscientist, I have worked with and personally trained many students and in my assessment, Lina is among the top 1% of the undergraduate students I have known, and I am convinced from my experience that she would be an outstanding candidate for any Healthcare profession, specifically Physician Assistant. Lina is a very astute and hardworking student with excellent GPA.…

It is a pleasure to be writing this letter of recommendation for Mallory Thompson. I have become well acquainted with Mallory this summer since she contacted me in order to shadow me in clinic. During this short period of time, it is absolutely clear to me that she is genuinely interested in a career as an optometrist and is truly committed to going to optometry school. Mallory followed me in clinic on several occasions and each time she interacted professionally with the patients and responded well to them.…

INTRODUCTION The lamina cribrosa (LC) within the scleral canal in the optic nerve head (ONH) is thought to be the primary site of axonal insult in glaucoma.1-3 It is of interest in glaucoma to understand the anatomy of the LC and surrounding tissues and how they change with aging and disease. LC has been investigated using a variety of methods, including histologic section,4,5 detergent digestion of surrounding tissues6,7 and finite element modeling.8,9 In human glaucomatous eyes, LC alterations may include posterior deformation,7,10 compression and thinning,10,11 molecular changes in astrocytes and other glial cells,12,13 laminar beam and pore size alterations14 and posterior migration of both the anterior and posterior laminar insertions from the sclera toward and sometimes into the pial sheath.15…

    Vestigial Evolution

Ranging from anatomical aspects of wisdom teeth and ear muscles to the behavioral palmar grasp reflex and goosebumps, to the molecular pseudogenes, human vestiges are quintessential imperfections of human evolution (Vieth, 2010). Synonymously referred to as evolutionary “leftovers,” vestigial structures are residual features derived from an organism's predecessors that have lost most or all of its ancestral function (“Evidence for Evolution,” 2016). The existence of vestigial structures is often relative to its lack of selective pressures since vestigial structures do not directly cause harm or affect the survival of the organism (“Evidence of Evolution,” n.d.). However, as reflected in the changed and reduced purpose of a fly’s second pair…
