Genre isn’t simply a fictional novel that relates to horror or fantasy; it’s actually imperative to our interactions with one another. Your genre will influence how your audience reacts to your writing and sets the tone for your context. Genre will help you organize what your writing’s purpose is, and will help illustrate what you are trying to conceptualize. As an example, when your mother seeks for a job, a resume is utilized in order to convey her achievements. By utilizing the proper genre of writing, she appears more professional as well as providing the details as to why she is capable for the job she has besought. Job resumes are a genre and have a specific task to fulfill and the audience, or in this case, the reader, knows what to expect from it. Now, when trying to write a film review, I implore you to utilize your resources (the internet) and read other film reviews. Your purpose to writing is simply why you are writing. Sounds simple enough, right? Typically, an author’s purpose revolves around trying to entertain, inform, or persuade their audience—like when you cleaned your room because you wanted to go out with your friends. Your purpose of behaving in that manner was so that you could persuade your mom to let you go have fun, similar to a writer’s purpose of doing a film review to persuade an audience to not watch a movie. Once you develop your purpose, it is quintessential to keep that purpose in focus, but do not be afraid to throw in entertaining elements if you feel that your audience will appreciate your work.
