He told me that he was murdered by his own brother and our “beloved King.” At first I was furious and I still am. However, seeing the way poor Claudius acted during the play assured me I am not crazy. I know this sounds all false, but please listen.
The play reenacted what I believe to be real life. A king murdered by his own brother for self gain and power. The widowed wife now married to the new King so soon after the funeral. Hamlet Reading Response #1 Hannah Woodside 1. Claudius’s aside confirms that what the ghost said to Hamlet is true. Claudius agrees with what Polonius says before him about how people use “devotion’s visage” (3.1.47) to hide their sins and he builds on that idea with a metaphor. He explains that the “harlot’s cheek” (3.1.51) is ugly in comparison to the “plastr’ing art” (3.1.51) used to make it beautiful.…

(Shakespeare, 3.3.41-43). He was completely self-serving and his come to Jesus came too little too late in the play, he had already been enjoying his role as King for far too long and had not taken any measures to emphasize his sincerity in his remorse. Claudius’s arrogance was very becoming and lent him a cold-calculating demeanor. By marrying Hamlet’s mother, and not caring about how Hamlet felt about the marriage shows that once again Claudius was only looking out for himself. If Claudius never existed there would be no Hamlet. King Hamlet would have probably died of natural causes or something else and when he died, Hamlet would just take the throne without any problem. Claudius set up the whole play from the moment he poured the poison down King Hamlet’s ear. With the crown as his goal he tells the public that his “dear brother” died after being bitten by a snake, and proceeds to take Elsinore and Gertrude. After the ghost of King Hamlet tells Hamlet that, “that incestuous, that adulterate beast, with witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts….won to his shameful lust the will of my most seeming-virtuous queen.”, that is what starts the plot as Hamlet is now filled with anger and revenge as he says, “It is 'Adieu, adieu!…

Hamlet, the main character in the play Hamlet puts on an antic disposition during which he pretends that he has descended into Madness. Many of the actions, and decisions Hamlet makes serve as proof to the reader that his madness is in fact staged. In the following quote King Claudius states “Nor what he spoke though it lack’de form a little, was not like madness” (Act 3, scene 1, 164). This quote proves that King Claudius picked up on the fact that Hamlet’s story of claiming madness alongside his actions, did not match up, causing King Claudius to not believe him. As a result, of coming to this realization that Hamlet was in his right mind, he ordered for Hamlet to be killed.…
