The United States National Debt is more than 20 trillion dollars and continues to grow each day. It is by far the greatest in the world and has increased by almost $1 trillion dollars each year since 2007. Despite the past presidents who attempted to help lower the debt, it has continued to abruptly grow. This continuous growth is what shut down the government in its tracks in 2013, and surpassed our countries new debt ceiling. The government shutdown and fear of being thrown back into a recession feasts throughout the entire nation every day.…
Framing is the “selection of a specific aspect of an event to emphasize one dominant feature in a news item” (Professor S. Jeppeson, personal communication, Feb 26th 2016). The news article chooses one dominant feature to focus on and excludes other information. This creates a bias in the information presented because they are purposely focusing on certain information and emphasizing that feature. Therefore media framing is how the news is presented in a way that changes the audience’s perception on a certain topic. The same topic can be presented differently by different news sources.…
Legalization of marijuana has been a controversial topic for many years now. People’s views on marijuana are clearly split and there are advocates for both sides of the spectrum. The name “marijuana” is quite recent but the cannabis plant was used frequently as a drug since the colonial times. Marijuana has changed our society socially and economically. It’s affecting a lot of people in the world because of the negative reputation it withholds. Marijuana has always been referred to as the gateway drug to all others, which has not always been true. The drug being illegal has created social issues and the ongoing detrimental War on Drugs. To elaborate more on this, I will include claims and evidence from David and Jack Cahn’s book When Millennials Rule: The Reshaping of America, where they describe the effects that the drug being illegal creates and does to certain communities.…
Since the discovery of the cannabis indica plant (marijuana), marijuana has been a topic of contrasting discussions. For decades, stakeholders of various organizations have been at conflict about legalizing marijuana. One stakeholder, Citizens Against Legalizing Marijuana (CALM), a local Political Action Committee (PAC), is destroying every act of legalizing marijuana with the use of their highly dedicated group of individuals. According to the mission of CALM, they “take the position that Federal laws against the use, cultivation, and transportation of marijuana should be maintained and enforced and should not be relaxed or softened.” (CALM Homepage)…

Marijuana Policy: Not As Detrimental Today, the United States of America is faced by rising demand for health care at lower costs with increasing population; is faced with increasing demand for education at affordable costs beside the huge bulk of unpaid student loans; and it is concerned with the high costs of living in the country. It is therefore feasible to devise ways to stabilize the country's economy and increase supply of these highly required services at affordable costs to all citizens. Many policies have been legislated and implemented with little or no success at meeting their intended purposes. One just has to look at Affordable Health Care policy, which was intended to make health care accessible to all at affordable costs.…
Bernadine Healy’s argument in the essay Legalize Marijuana? Obama Has the Right to Say No is based on the government having the right to regulate usage of marijuana. Healy claims individuals want marijuana legalized because they see marijuana as a recreational purpose which blinds them from seeing that they are deviating from social situations. Healy’s criticism of individuals who are for the legalization of marijuana only see a reason for legalization because of recreational use.…
The legalization of marijuana has been a frequently debated topic all over the world with many countries legalizing marijuana usage. However, marijuana use and cultivation is illegal in Canada, except for patients who can use medicinal marijuana if they are approved under the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations (Health Canada, 2014). The risk of marijuana legalization to adolescents is more than it is a risk to adults, even if the legalization comes with an age limit like Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) suggests (CAMH, 2014). In fact, the legalization of marijuana would allow the drug to be more accessible to adolescents which would not only have detrimental effects on the health of teenagers, but their future important life outcomes as well. Therefore, Marijuana should not be legalized.…
Most countries have passed laws to ban marijuana but marijuana legalization has been enacted in some countries across the world as Canada will do. Although today, critics insist that marijuana can cause addiction, overdose, and others problems, many people support that legalizing cannabis can bring about positive effects for people who want to feel relaxed with marijuana instead of hard drugs like heroin and on education to a teenager. Also, marijuana legalization can make people more access to a lower price of marijuana. Some People said that marijuana legalization could cause serious problems. For example, Rothstein (Sep 9, 2016) claims “The heroin epidemic was caused by the legalization of marijuana.”…
