Introduction

Shipbuilding refers to the construction of ships that able of floating. Shipbuilding typically takes place in a shipyard by specialized engineers, boat builders, and other marine experts. Shipyard, a place which ships are constructs and repairs such as painting, welding, piping, insulating, repairing and general contracting. Early, Lee Trading (Boat) Company is a shipping company, which has established by Mr.Lee Teng Hooi since 1975. Initially, the company was located at Lumut Town. The company was established to deal with the business that provides tugboat and barge services. Since the operation of the company is very small, the services were run by Mr. Lee and his family. Follow the development of the Lumut town as a tourist center, Lee Trading (Boat) Company was forced to move to Kampung Acheh Industrial Park.
The location of the new operation site was more strategy than the initial operation area, Mr.Lee decided to expand his company on that year, Lee Teng Hooi & Sons Trading Sdn. Bhd. was established to cope with the expansionary of the company. Port services were started during that period. Follow by the progression of the company more tugboat was built in the following year and more barge was purchase to provide services. In the beginning the depth of the port only can allow berthing for tugboat and barge. On 1993 the dredging and piling work started. After work done, the port can support for various type of vessels (Cargo ships max. 2000 tons’ capacity, barge, tugboat and etc.). Background of UniKL MIMET Shipyard UniKL MIMET a MARA Technical Institute of Higher Learning was established in 2004. On 20th August 2002, MIMET became an Institute of University Kuala Lumpur and named University Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology.
Offering a number of industry specific courses are the main function of UniKL MIMET. The program is designed to produce high-quality talent for the marine and marine industries. Students who graduates from UniKL MIMET will have the opportunity to expand their career in various fields such as Boatbuilding, Shipbuilding, Welding and Fabrication, Ship & Project Planning, Naval Architecture, Technical Design / Draught Person, CAM Programming, Ship Maintenance, Hydraulic and Pneumatics, CNC Machining, Steel & Aluminum Fabrication, Fiberglass and others.
MIMET has 7000 sqm. of shipyard workplace. There includes fabrication workshop, fiberglass workshop, marine workshop and other facilities and lab. MIMET shipyard will also involve in ship repair activities. Students are allowed to use the workshop under permission and supervision from lecturer or technician.
