Learning A Second Language By Meg Butler

In the accompanying article, “Learning a Second Language”, the writer, Meg Butler, mentions that students learn a second language through making flash cards and spending hours memorizing verb conjugations. Although children may be able to gain a firmer grasp on second languages before the age of 10, I am not sure that they would be as receptive to the same method of teaching. The article points out that certain schools “like Language Stars capitalize on this window and are able to teach children a new language simply through immersion.” However, these schools educate their students through immersion, rather than one period a day for a semester (with a year in between) in a classroom. The excerpt Crash Course (Nancy Honovich) describes what asteroids are and everything about them to how often they occur and how close they have to be to be too close for comfort. At the beginning of the story, it tells about what asteroids are and their history. They even said that a comet called the Shoemaker-Levy 9 sped towards Jupiter at sixty kilometers a second. That is really fast! It also told about how sixty-five million years ago, it is thought that one measly asteroid could have killed dinosaurs that inhabited the earth.…

Meeting parental expectations and completing all of the “requirements” to be a successful son or daughter has always been part of the main goal and developing process for everyone, no matter how old the “child” is. Sandra Cisneros and Amy Tan, authors of two unique essays - "Only Daughter" and "Mother Tongue" - with the similar theme, are sharing their experiences and thought processes regarding that question. They have something in common – both women immigrated to the United States with their families and both decided to major in English to become writers. However, these are the only few similarities that authors have. Everything else is different and almost antithetical – mother that had her own “broken” English for Amy Tan and…

When re-reading "Mother Tongue" By Amy Tan, the author has gone into details expressing a portion of her life growing up with the man Englishes that she has had. Between unconsciously switching from "proper" English to a " broken" form only spoken between her family, this has allowed her to overcome several adversities in her life. Immigrant children are among the most stressed children of their generation when it comes to today's time. In the past decades the percentage of immigrant children has increased from 4.7 percent to 12.9 percent. This significant increase is putting more children into poverty and ultimately setting them up for either failure or success with no grey area in-between. There is also the anxious thoughts put into their minds about being in a new place with unfamiliar people or objects, even sounds. These children need to learn skills that they would have never even thought about learning which to them, is the ultimate source of their stress.…

The importance of using L1 to benefit L2 is essential for student success. In this paper, I will argue that we need to acknowledge students L1 as resource by drawing upon course texts, such as Hornberger and Link, Huff Post and the video about “The Benefits of a Bilingual Brain”. First of all, understanding a bilingual brain is essential in order to recognize its relevance in using L1 to acquire L2. Nacamulli mentions that there are three types of bilingual people: Compound bilingual, Coordinate bilingual, and Subordinate bilingual.…

I recently went on a school trip to Spain over Spring break. In the beginning, I was very nervous. I was so scared to get on the plane without my parents, being away from them for a week and a half, staying in a different country for that long, and staying with a family that I don't really know for 4 days towards the end of the trip. When I was on that trip, I realized that only knowing 3-4 years of Spanish doesn't get you very far. The whole time when I was in Spain, I only knew 4 or 5 words throughout a whole 10-20 minute conversation.…

Moving to the subject of the lowest requirement throughout all fifty states, foreign language. The language barrier is one of the biggest perpetuators of modern racism. It is known that lack of understanding breeds hate, so the inability to communicate directly and immediately creates an air of suspicion and fear of the unknown. The majority of American schools do not require a language class, and those that do are almost always offered at a high school level (ECU High School Requirements). It’s proven that children learn languages much faster at younger ages (O’grady, How Children Learn Language).…

How do we decide what is correct and incorrect in terms of grammar and who decides this? Prescriptive rules and language authority are often talked about in the book How English Works by Anne Curzan and Michael Adams (Curzan and Adams, 2012). After doing some reading and research, the usage of prescriptive grammar rules in my future classroom would be very limited. I would limit these rules based off of language authority and grammar rules.…

Although the following area is not necessarily involving details of daily life, I would like to include recreation and travel because it is an interesting field of comparison for me, considering that my husband and my children used to regularly travel and sightsee around Germany and Europe. My main point is that we had to mostly abstain from this habit since we moved to the U.S. for several reasons. Visiting worthy sights in the U.S. appears to be more expensive, and most important, traveling to interesting sights takes much longer (which will add to the higher prices when you have to book accommodations). A smaller factor, but also important, is the factor of high crime rates within U.S. major cities; European cities definitely have crime…
