Leadership Philosophy: United States Air Force

Leadership Philosophy

My leadership philosophy was acquired while serving this great nation in two branches of service; the United States Air Force (USAF) (1985 – 1995), the United States Army Reserves (USAR) (2010 – 2012) and the USAR Active Guard Reserve (AGR) (2012 – Present). During this 14 year timeframe I developed the morals and values that shaped me into a better, well rounded, Soldier. My military background added a knowledge base that cannot be learned in our educational system. Throughout my career, I have seen good and bad leadership. The issue of toxicity within our ranks cannot be tolerated and I believe leaders who perpetrate it are ultimately crying out for help. Good leaders treat people with dignity and respect. I

The article, “Toxic Leadership: What Are We Talking About?” brings attention to the characteristics and the climate that breeds a toxic leader. We as a unit do create an environment that allows these leaders to thrive. We have leaders that are not qualified to lead, but are placed in leadership positions. We have Team Sergeants that have met the requirements to be selected for that position, but may not meet standards that we hold dear to us a Regiment. When this happens, resentment and inflexibility happens.…

I do not feel that you can have one without the other, and I have seen plenty of bad leaders that do not follow both. Being a National Guard Soldier, I have seen many commanders and NCOIC’s that have focused too much on mission accomplishment and spending no time on the Soldiers. They work them ridiculous hours, hammer them when they do something wrong, and talk down or belittle them in front of the unit. Then they come to us full-time staff and ask why retention is down as well as the moral of the troops. Even though you can call that a bad leader, you can still learn from that leader just doing the reverse of what they…

In a community, being a leader is often difficult due to all the components and struggles that go into being one. A leader is an individual who can take charge in various situations, and do it effectively in a way which makes others follow them. Throughout my years, I have grown from being a primarily shy person to someone who is not afraid to step up and be the leader I am now. Today, I am able to consistently demonstrate what it is to be a leader in my daily life. Although coming into high school as a freshman was intimidating for me, I knew that in order to succeed, I needed to open up and try something new.…

Toxic leadership is the biggest contributor to low morale, undo stress, and most unfortunately the loss of great soldiers. While many of us have experienced toxic leadership at least once in our careers, undoubtedly we have also known great soldiers that have simply had enough and chosen to separate from the Army because of it. To me this is one of the worst effects that toxic leadership can have because it takes guys with an abundance of experience that could have been excellent Commanders and CSMs, and subsequently removed them from the pool. So why wouldn’t Soldiers just wait it out?…

My leadership philosophy is one that is rooted in the strong belief that it must be a continuous quest to motivate all students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and lifelong learners, while possessing outstanding character. This includes assisting students with discovering their talents and interests, therefore developing a love of learning, while developing into ethical, productive citizens. Accomplishing this requires a leader who is knowledgeable in pedagogy and curriculum, including the use of data and current assessments to enhance instruction, and who possesses outstanding communication skills, the ability to manage an operation’s resources effectively, promotes collaboration and teamwork, and is passionate and committed to helping students learn. I believe that my interpersonal skills will be my biggest strength as an educational leader. Through frequent, honest communication, and my enthusiasm for the subject, I will demonstrate understanding and compassion for those around me, therefore building trusting relationships.…
