Individuals should analyze their leadership characteristics. By self-assessing personal and work experiences, it allows for an examination of what type of leader an individual wants to be. There are many leadership theories that an individual can follow. This paper will discuss my views on leadership, the leadership theories that I relate to, and examples that assisted in creating these views.
I believe that there are some individuals who are natural leaders, but I also believe that leadership can be developed in individuals. Another characteristic of the authentic leadership theory is that a leader has positive traits that others relate to, and they allow collaboration (Kinsler, 2014). I believe that leadership is not leading by control, but leadership is guidance. I have also been in a situation where the leader led by dictatorship and intimidation. Employees believed that all actions had consequences. Since employees did not know what the consequences would be, employees were afraid to proceed with projects and make decisions, and projects were not completed. The concept is the sharing of leadership among others (Komives, Lucas, & McMahon, 2013). I also believe that decision-making and creating goals should be shared among the other employees. By having employee input, it creates a vested interest in projects, tasks, and goals, and it creates motivation among employees (Erkutlu & Chafra, 2017).
Another concept of leadership that I believe is that leaders should be able to motivate individuals to be the best that they can be. I believe that leadership should be concerned for other individuals and value productivity and that the relationship between a leader and the employees should have trust.
