Although her main goal was to survive the Hunger Games and make it back home to her family, she was able to inspire others, attract followers and build unity in doing so. Another prominent character in the Hunger Games movie that played a leadership role is President Coriolanus Snow. President Snow’s leadership style was very different from the leadership style of Katniss. Snow was more of an authoritarian leader which typically involves the leader having complete control over decision making, goals and communication, with minimal to no input from others. In addition to President Snow and Katniss, there were several other leadership examples in the Hunger Games movie, including the leadership roles played by Peeta Mellark and Haymitch Abernathy. Transformational Leadership and Traits Effective leaders empower and motivate their followers. Katniss’s leadership is similar to the transformational leadership model. Transformational leaders implement change in the views and thoughts of followers to relate to their vision of the future. Transformational leadership not only involves vision and influence but it also involves empowerment, creativity, and interaction. Transformational leaders motivate their followers to achieve high performance levels, improve morale and help their follower to become leaders themselves. According to (Riggio, 2009), there are four major components involved in transformational leadership: 1. Idealized Influence - The leader serves as an ideal role model for followers. 2. Inspirational Motivation - Transformational leaders have the ability to inspire and motivate followers. 3. Individualized Consideration - Transformational leaders demonstrate genuine concern for the needs and feelings of followers.
