Like Ralph, he is a born leader and gathers his followers. However, he becomes more defiant and paints his face. “For hunting. Like in the war. You know-dazzle paint” (Golding 63). After painting his face, he turns into a savage, and so are his followers. He turns them into hostile human beings instead of rational and wise children. They become completely different people due to Jack’s violent nature. Also, they become more violent and sing a chant every time they attempt to kill a pig. When he kills a pig and shares it with the others, he doesn’t give any to Piggy. His excuse is “You didn’t hunt” (Golding 80). This shows that Jack is unfair because other people like Simon and Ralph, who didn’t hunt, still received meat. In Ralph’s case, some of the boys like Simon and Piggy become more rational. For instance, Simon realizes that savagery exists in all of them and that the beast is actually themselves. However, he dies due to this because he is the one who actually realizes this and mostly due to the lack of leadership in Jack’s tribe. In Jack’s case, the boys turn into savages because they follow whatever Jack does. Before Jack takes over, Ralph changes the civilization because he creates stability and order through government and rules. He improves the condition they live in and care for others. His priority is to be rescued, and the civilization revolves around this goal. Jack's society is barbaric, and he changed the civilization for the worst by turning everyone into savages.
