Personal Narrative: My Leadership At North Georgia College And State University

Superior Essays
My leadership crucible did not take place in my military leadership tenure but as senior in college at North Georgia College and State University. The experience of serving as a fraternity president during a time of probation helped shape me into the organizational leader I am today. My fraternity experienced an unfortunate alcohol related event leading it to serve a one-year probation period. At the same time, my peers elected me as President of the fraternity to lead it during this time of adversity and eventually off probation. The presidency presented numerous challenges including morale issues, sharing a common focus, making difficult decisions and working with executives on the school advisory board. The entire experience helped …show more content…
My only exposure to fraternities were the negative stories in the news channels or stories I heard from the big fraternities at the University of Georgia just an hour away from my hometown. Contrary to the large fraternity social scene at big universities, North Georgia presented a unique Greek life due to the Corps of Cadets and strong NCAA athletics. A majority of the students in the Corps of Cadets and on athletic teams were also part of Greek life. These two organizations assisted in Greek life being a positive experience for the student body and in the local community. I played on the soccer team and would later join a fraternity. The fraternity I joined took pride in not hazing, being drug free, and being leaders in school organizations and in the community. I later served as the fraternity’s recruitment chairperson and pledge educator during my sophomore and junior years. It was during my junior year where the fraternity experienced a significant event putting the chapter at risk of losing its charter. The fraternity held its annual “Holiday Ball” in December at a local event center where we followed all the local laws and school social policies. Unfortunately, one of my good friends and brothers who was of the …show more content…
The fraternity produced great leaders who were part of the surrounding communities and high-ranking military officials to include several General Officer’s. I felt it was my obligation to see their hard work not go to ruin by my generation and immediately worked to gain the trust of fraternity’s alumni and school administrators. I faced several challenges along the way to protecting the charter including morale issues, keeping all the brothers focused on the long-term mission and making some tough disciplinary decisions. Due to the probation, several brothers quit the fraternity and we had the lowest numbers of recruits in years. This caused a little unrest at first but turned into a positive situation later in the school year. Those certain brothers were only there for the social scene and not for the deeper meaning of being part of the fraternity to include being leaders on school campus and in the community. I built a team of loyal brothers to serve on the executive staff who were committed to protecting the charter. During this time, morale was at a low point and the executive staff began focusing on the positives surrounding the fraternity. We committed to improving our leadership positions in campus organizations and in the corps of cadets, improving the fraternity’s overall GPA, dominating intramural sports league and conducting more

“Are fraternities acting in an ethical manner, requiring good behavior and punishing poor decisions? Or are they keeping a cool distance from the mayhem, knowing full well that it occurs with regularity?” (Flanagan). Many individuals have never taken out the time to research and study some of the hidden secrets about fraternities. However, author Caitlin Flanagan wrote “The Dark Power of Fraternities” published in 2014 in The Atlantic, and she argues all of the hidden flaws within fraternities that are often covered up.…

When I was first introduced to Lambda Theta Phi Latino Fraternity Inc., certain aspects of the organization caught my attention. First and foremost, the organization promotes unity within the Latino community. Being united as Latinos is essential because together we acquire great accomplishments for the betterment of the community as well as ourselves. Moreover, being united provides the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities as Latinos and break the barriers society has imposed upon us. For me, being able to interact with Latinos at UNCG, through this organization, and having the opportunity to meet individuals who demonstrate valuable character is of great importance.…

Looking back now, there really is no better advice to give someone. The rush process has been perfected over decades of use; everyone ends up in the house they are meant to be in. Formal rush is an effective and quick way for members to have contact with all the potential new members, and streamlines how sororities recruit new pledge classes. As the viewpoints of the members evolve and change, the new pledge classes represent that. The process doesn’t work when it isn’t followed correctly, such as when alumnae step in and make decisions meant for the current members.…

Growing up, many of us have obtained some knowledge on greek-letter organizations somehow. Whether we have all seen movies about colleges that are fraternity and sorority based or through social media. They’ve given us a little insight on the college life and if you’re like me, these moves have gotten you inspired and excited for college. They’ve shown us the crazy parties, the popularity, the step battles, and the harsh hazing as well. Even though we see an abundance of what goes on in these organizations, these movies do not give us a full understanding of greek letter organizations.…

We all have seem to have our different views of what “Greek life” really is, but have we really observed the people and the things they do? Despite the ongoing stereotypes we hear about Greek Life on college campuses, being involved here at UCM seems to be very beneficial for not only the students, but the community too. From the start of my four year commitment to football and marching band I saw leadership all around me. My first summer of football my freshman year the seniors were prime examples of leadership. They were right there to correct form on our lifts, blocks, and set the overall example of what it meant to be a Mead football player. Later that summer I threw in marching band camp to my agenda. The drum major, my sister, lead the band with kept the entire band in order, and worked with us until our sets were flawless.…

While more than half of sexual assaults against women of college age occur off campus, on campus assaults are a problem that college and universities can and should do more to address. The best statistics show there is a correlation between 3 factors, alcohol use, sorority membership, and class status, and sexual assault on campus. To combat these trends colleges and universities need to address these factors while taking into account that any measures they take not simply move the problem from campus to off campus locations. This means that the measures taken should be centered on raising awareness, encouraging responsibility, and holding offenders accountable in a just way, while also addressing the campus code of conduct.…

The Greek Communities at Colleges and Universities around the United States are a powerful and pervasive force on campus. Unfortunately, when it comes to sexual assault, the statistics around greek life are all too unsettling. The National Institute of Justice reports that sorority membership is an extreme risk factor for sexual assault. Research has also proven that Fraternity houses, where most sororities hang out in their free time, are extremely dangerous for women. Studies also support the claims that Fraternity men are three times more likely to commit rape than a man who is not Greek.…

My first leadership experience came from being a voluntary work as a life- and management skills trainer, where I had to deal with different background, minds and studies trainees, to be the leader of my own session, the thing that let me build my communication, discussion and presentation skills. During this period I have met so many people with various way of thinking, where I succeed dealing with them each time. After that I started working as assistant supervisor in a psychological support centre for the international medical corps, where I had the chance to deal with very professional and creative people, the hardest thing was being accepted as the youngest member of the team and to be known as a leader , but being in this atmosphere…

Greek life on campus is an aspect of upper education that is publicized often, many proclaiming the social and educational benefits of living with your peers, but has a significant amount of negative stigma attached to it. Although the tales told of fraternities and sororities are sometimes exaggerated, there are many more cases where Greek life organizations have garnered copious amounts of attention for controversial behavior. In Fraternity and Sorority Alcohol Use: Does Race Matter?, Michael Capece, David Schantz, and Rebecca Wakeman expound upon one of these behaviors, specifically detailing the general perception of alcohol consumption within fraternities and sororities and across two different races, from the point of view of research.…

On a sweltering summer day in the City of Atlanta or the “ATL” as it is affectionately known today, I visited my best friend while he visited his father for the summer. That day I remember vividly because as soon as we stepped outside of the airport to take the “MARTA” train, I began to sweat profusely. Anyone that has been to Atlanta during the summer knows it is incredibly humid there. A week earlier I had seen my friend, and we planned out what we were going to do that week I visited. I knew I wanted to visit Spellman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College, but before I could visit the Atlanta University Center or the “AUC” as it is called to the locals, I felt compelled to visit the grave site of one of the most influential human being to walk this earth.…

I was never a fan of fraternities. At first, I thought people who joined were just after the impression of other people that they look cool because they have a fraternity. In addition there are alot of hazing issues reported on media, which tells people that joining a fraternity is dangerous. Despite the negative stigma against fraternities, the majority of the society will never truly know the hard-earned joy of being initiated into a brotherhood, the bond that is tight enough to be considered family and the importance of looking at the bigger picture. Initiation is the action of receiving someone into a concealed organization, typically with a ritual.…
