My only exposure to fraternities were the negative stories in the news channels or stories I heard from the big fraternities at the University of Georgia just an hour away from my hometown. Contrary to the large fraternity social scene at big universities, North Georgia presented a unique Greek life due to the Corps of Cadets and strong NCAA athletics. A majority of the students in the Corps of Cadets and on athletic teams were also part of Greek life. These two organizations assisted in Greek life being a positive experience for the student body and in the local community. I played on the soccer team and would later join a fraternity. The fraternity I joined took pride in not hazing, being drug free, and being leaders in school organizations and in the community. I later served as the fraternity’s recruitment chairperson and pledge educator during my sophomore and junior years. It was during my junior year where the fraternity experienced a significant event putting the chapter at risk of losing its charter. The fraternity held its annual “Holiday Ball” in December at a local event center where we followed all the local laws and school social policies. The fraternity produced great leaders who were part of the surrounding communities and high-ranking military officials to include several General Officer’s. I felt it was my obligation to see their hard work not go to ruin by my generation and immediately worked to gain the trust of fraternity’s alumni and school administrators. I faced several challenges along the way to protecting the charter including morale issues, keeping all the brothers focused on the long-term mission and making some tough disciplinary decisions. Due to the probation, several brothers quit the fraternity and we had the lowest numbers of recruits in years. This caused a little unrest at first but turned into a positive situation later in the school year. Those certain brothers were only there for the social scene and not for the deeper meaning of being part of the fraternity to include being leaders on school campus and in the community. I built a team of loyal brothers to serve on the executive staff who were committed to protecting the charter. During this time, morale was at a low point and the executive staff began focusing on the positives surrounding the fraternity. We committed to improving our leadership positions in campus organizations and in the corps of cadets, improving the fraternity’s overall GPA, dominating intramural sports league and conducting more
