Latin America Personal Statement

Being a Latina is more than just a label it is my everyday experience. It is what has empowered me to become the first in my family to graduate both high school and college in the United States. I have experienced what it’s like to be afraid of going outside to an unsafe neighborhood, living with the fear of losing my parents because of their immigration status, growing up without any health insurance and debating at a young age whether I was sick enough to be seen by a doctor. My life experiences and community have driven and inspired me to become a physician. I intend to be a culturally competent and socially conscious physician. I plan to use the acquired skills and knowledge to address the health care needs of minority and medically underserved communities, promote the health and well being of communities and ferociously fight to reduce and end preventable diseases facing the patient population. Therefore, I cannot imagine myself anywhere other than Meharry’s School of Medicine; it is only here where I can imagine receiving the best education and training. It is only at Meharry where I can be surrounded by physicians with similar mission statements and professional goals that are willing to nurture a generation of competent and compassionate student physicians focused on addressing health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities and patient
