‘The Arrival’ is a movie which shows the relation between language and cognitive. The main character, Dr. Louise Bank is a linguist who has successfully proved the correlation between language and thoughts where she adopted the Sapir-Whorf theory. The main agenda in this movie is to show how two different languages communicate in such both sides can’t understand each other’s language. In my opinion, Dr. Bank together with Dr. Ian, however, have done their job very well in understanding the purpose of the Heptapods coming to the Earth by using the theory taught in the Sapir-Whorf theory. As we could see, in order to acquire a language, it at least takes weeks, months or even worst, years to really master a language. This is because language consists of syntax, semantics and pragmatics to be comprehended by the language learners in order to understand the message conveys by a speaker. To strengthen the argument, when the baby started to acquire language, the parents can’t directly teach them the whole sentence What they need to do is teaching them simple vocabulary such as ‘mummy’, ‘daddy’ and ‘eat’ before taking the next steps to let the baby understand the message. After the baby could perceive the simple vocabularies, then the parents could start teaching them more complex one. Imitation is seen as one of the best ways that could be taught to the baby for them to understand the complex vocabulary. First, she started to teach them simple vocabulary by introducing her name and Ian’s name and introduce them as human.
