Both men have had much in common with each other since the beginning because their family conflicts expanded significantly; the same emotions were triggered and provoked them to plot similar actions. As expected, Hamlet and Laertes are second generation sons who are future prominent leaders, but their fathers are in the way from achieving such expectations. Both of them battle the same issue of family troubles as their fathers constantly hold them back by keeping them under surveillance. With Laertes, Polonius is drastically overprotective of his kids, especially towards his son. Laertes, as Ophelia, has just lost a father and in his despair he has sworn revenge, but at seeing his sister, his anger intensifies as he states “Hadst thou thy wits, and didst persuade revenge, It could not move thus” (IV.v.169-170). Her insanity leaves her looking like someone who is in need of protection and inspires sympathy and pity from others. Laertes’ unwillingness to face his guilt of not being there for his sister transfigures into blaming others for her insanity. Even after her insanity has driven her to death, Ophelia still has an effect on the ones she left behind. She is the factor that leads to a confrontation between Hamlet and Laertes of who loved her the most even though both of them were contributors of her descent into madness.…

Laertes is momentarily in complete control of the kingdom evidenced by his commanding the guards to leave the room so that he can be alone with the king. The kingdom is at the moment in complete support of Laertes which is made apparent by the way that they storm the castle as an angry mod with Laertes at the head. Leartes is not worried about what his own, nor the kings, eternity hold if he kills the king. The one thing that Laertes is consumed with at this moment is exacting revenge for his father’s murder. A third and final aspect that I would like to point out that Hamlet and Laertes have in common is the love that both hold for Ophelia, and that each one, despite their love for her, lose her in the end.…

Laertes and Hamlet are foils, because Hamlet is constantly changing his mind about avenging his father’s death and Laertes clearly does not care what happens to him in the afterlife as long as he gets revenge for his father’s death. “To cut his throat I’ th’ church” (IV,vii,231) Hamlet’s thinking is that if he kills he will not go to heaven and Laertes’ thinking is the complete opposite and does not care if he slits Hamlet’s throat in church. (I,I,13–14). Horatio is talking about the difference between Fortinbras and Hamlet. How different it was when his father (the king) was going up against Fortinbras and keeping everything under control and now Fortinbras is taking charge, rounding up troops ready for whatever.…
