First of all, Yalta feels sinful for the reason that it is a vacation town and that it has a reputation for making people make bad decisions. “He arrived in Moscow on a fine frosty day,” (Chekov 172). The reason that this would make sense for setting the mood is that during the time that Gurov is in Moscow he is very unhappy. He is unhappy for the reason that he is unable to be with Anna and she is all that he can think about. The tone in Moscow that got to Gurov was when an official shouted “You were right this evening: the sturgeon was a bit too strong!” (Chekov 173). Finally Anna’s house is very constricting as well as depressing for the reason that it has a gloomy and tight feel. The reason that it feels tight and constricting is that there is a large fence around almost as if it keeping whoever lives there in. “One would run away from a fence like that, thought Gurov,” (Chekov 174). This also makes it feel very depressing, since the gate makes it look like a prison. In conclusion, setting in the story “The Lady with the Dog” plays an important role in setting the mood and tone. The reason for this is to help us understand the way that the characters are feeling at certain points and locations in the story.
