Graffiti is something that has been in the world since Rome. People would use graffiti as a political resistance tactic. Graffiti back in that time was merely scratches on a wall, nothing compared to what it is today. Graffiti has progressed since that time and is now being seen as art despite being a crime as well. Many people perceive graffiti as a male dominant activity due to the nature of modern day graffiti. Pink was the only female who was well known for competing with the male artists in the graffiti subculture. Pink got started doing graffiti in 1979 because of her boyfriend ,who was arrested because of graffiti and ended up moving back to Puerto Rico. She fell in love with the art of graffiti so she started posting stickers of her boyfriend’s name which is a process known as tagging. After months of tagging her boyfriend’s name, she then started tagging her nickname that said “Lady Pink” all over New York city. She chose the nickname Lady Pink because her friends in high school told her she needed a feminine name instead of her boyfriends name, so she chose the name “Lady” because of her obsession with historical romances. Pink described her graffiti style as a lettered New York style. The New York graffiti style is a very rigid lettering. Pink began to gain popularity because there were not many female artist at the time. Most of the females artist would quit and move on to different careers because they had no hope or determination. There were no female artist when Pink was around, but she took full advantage. She admires Georgia O’Keefe. She liked her because she was told that her artwork looked very similar at the age of 16.That gave her the confidence and motivation she has today. She thought that if she was as good as Georgia now, she can only imagine how great she can be when she is older. They have exhibited with each other in multiple locations. Pink is also inspired by Jenny Holzer, who also did some cooperative paintings together. There are alot of negative people who downgrade Pinks art, but she feels that it is necessary. It’s necessary because graffiti is illegal. Vandelism is a crime that is never tolerated by the authorities and pink understands the consequences, but she says that “It is a crime, its vandalism according to the authorities so I can’t argue that point. Of course, it’s a crime; it’s vandalism. The authorities say so. In this country, in this age its illegal. In other countries, in other times it has not been. It’s a perfectly accepted piece of art form. It is just in this country at this time that they call graffiti illegal. It’s necessary we shake things up. The freedom of expression, the fact that art has been so removed from the common people and it is now full of its own intellectual superiority that is just for the wealthy, the cultured. You have to be very schooled in order to do it. That’s just bullshit. It has to be indoors, inside a gallery with
