Due to the story presented within Ran itself, I would not say that life is fated in particular, however I would argue that the film depicts the nature of how karma and how ones actions eventually leads back to oneself. This is because how everyone in the film presents themselves and their actions in comparison with how they end up in the end of the story. An example of this is Lady Kaede’s deception throughout the film. After attempting to off Lady Sue multiple times and work her manipulates others for her revenge, she is eventually found out and murdered for it. This sort of karmic outcome is seen throughout the majority of its characters within the story. This is true especially for that of Hidetora, as he has committed many atrocities throughout his life that end up coming back to him over the course of the film. However, Hidetora is a little different as he is put through a ton of suffering throughout the film as his own sort of ‘personal hell’ because of his former actions. This hell Hidetora goes through allows him to recognize his mistakes and see all the bad things he has done. Even though Hidetora has had become self-aware of his cruel conducts, he still ends up paying for it with his life in the end. Thus, continuing the cycle of karma seen throughout the film. It does not seem like most of the characters could have chosen other paths throughout the film as their former actions has lead them down a specific path over the course of the
