Catalase, is an enzyme where hydrogen peroxide is broken down to water and oxygen ; which causes a response. Found in a lot organisms that live in the surrounding of oxygen, catalase can fend off the buildup and protects cellular organs from damage by peroxide, which is always produced by many reactions. The catalase enzyme is critically important to are health, it can be found in nearly every living organism exposed to oxygen. In the catalase lab we measured the amount of catalase in each ingredient by combining each ingredient with hydrogen peroxide and sticking into a test tube emerged under water to measure the amount of oxygen.

The object of the lab was to test the four substances and test them to see which one has the highest amount of catalase. The dependent variable was the amount of oxygen and the independent variable was the four substances; potato, carrots, yeast, and lettuce because they stood on their own. For our group data lettuce had the most catalase with an oxygen level of 20 ml and potato had the least with 6 ml of oxygen. Our class data shows that yeast has the most catalase with an oxygen level at 20.5ml

We could expand this experiment by testing other substances for example variety of foods including fruits and vegetables; boiled liver, onions, apple. The class gathered different data than our group but we believed the class data was more accurate because there were 14 different groups data combined in one which means that the class data is more accurate. Our group data said the lettuce had the most catalase, then yeast, carrots and with the least catalase potatoes. The class data showed that yeast had the most, then lettuce, carrots and with the least catalase potatoes. The catalase lab taught us how to measure the amount of catalase in a
