In February of 1839, Portuguese slave hunters abducted a large group of Africans from Sierra Leone and shipped them to Havana, Cuba, which was a hub for slave trade. This was highly illegal and violated all the treaties that were in place at that time. Once they arrived in Havana Cuba the 53 slaves that were illegally purchased were then boarded onto a slave ship named the Amistad. During the middle of their trip the illegally purchased slaves overthrew the crew killing 2 and ordering the survivors to head back to Africa. Sadly, the ship never made it to Africa it ended up on the coast of Long Island, New York in august of 1839. The United States now had a very important and Diplomatic case to deal with.
