LIM proteins have their own transcription factors and cytoskeletal elements. Structurally, a LIM domain has cysteines with 2 zinc fingers. These LIM homeodomain (LIM-HD) proteins regulate the formation of cell line cells and influence differentiation. (Dawid et al., 1995) To control these proteins, it is suspected that they all have a DNA-binding specificity due to the similarities between species. Dawid et al., (1995) suggests that the domains of these species can be grouped into 5 categories based on their function and structure. In Hobert (2000), he …show more content…
elegans genes lin-11 and mec-3 were the first to be associated with the LIM homeodomain proteins. The genes lin-11 and mec-3 are important to Caenorhabditis elegans because they are involved with neuronal differentiation, these proteins correspond to the ‘L’ and ‘M’ in acronym. lin-11 specifically influences the development vulva (Ferguson and Horvitz, 1985). There are many types of lim not currently being pursued in our experimentation: lim-4, and lim-6. A defect in lim-4 results in defects in odorsensory neurons and controls the shape of the axon for a specific motor neuron. When the lim-6 gene is not correctly functioning in the C. elegans the neurons are affected, it is tied to the neurotransmitter GABA and can impact that signaling pathway. lim-6, deals with the uterus of the organism in the endothelial lining. If the neurotransmitter GABA is not correctly released and transmitted through the neurons the contractions of the Caenorhabditis elegans is affected (Hobert, 2000). These lim genes do not impact the fate of the cell, it just affects structure and …show more content…
This is a gene is from the Islet protein, which is a subset within the acronym for LIM. This gene, lim-7 gene is responsible for a transcription factor. These proteins have transcription factors that are critical for both development of motor neurons and non-neural cells in the organism, C. elegans. Since, lim-7::GFP is a reporter gene that is able to be a marker for the sheath cells, researchers were able to analyze the role of the Islet protein. Voutev et al., (2009) showed that lim- 7 mutants died; when the gene is deleted in the organism, it results in lethality. The study showed, lim-7 was an important gene; the Caenorhabditis elegans are arrested early in their larval stage. This single gene is capable of affecting multiple traits, because when they examined protein from a strain that had a deletion in exons 4–5 (spliced together exon 2 and exon 6) the researchers knew from sequencing the LIM domain would be impacted. Thus, Voutev et al., (2009) suggested that a functional protein product would not be
