L Aquila Earthquake Research Paper

A. Before the L'Aquila earthquake in 2009 people were starting to prepare for a earthquake but not a 6.3 earthquake. However, there was miscommunication between the scientist and the people of L'Aquila. Since earthquakes are the hardest natural disaster to predict, nothing is always 100 percent accurate. The seismologist involved with the making of predictions did not want to scare the people and make them prepare for an earthquake that was not going to come, when the seismologist were not even postie of the earthquake coming. Even if they would have said a huge earthquake was coming, everyone would have been in panic mode and when the earthquake never arrived the six seismologist and the government employee would have still the people mad at them. When the earthquake hit in the morning time of April 9th, nobody was really prepared for the catastrophe it was going to make. More than 300 people were killed by the earthquake and thousands were injured. Even some historic buildings were left in shamble. Of course, the people were extremely upset with the seismologist because the people thought the seismologist did not know how to do there job. The six seismologist and the government official were charged with manslaughter and are having to spend six years in jail with a 10 million dollar fine each.

When I look at it from the peoples stand point and imagine if I lost somebody due to the earthquake, I see where they would want to charge the seven men. After I have looked at all the information and I agree the seismologist should have been more informative ,however, i do not think they should have went to jail. Earthquakes are not easy to predict and more than likely of they predict a major earthquake it will not happen. Now other scientist are scared to make predictions or not make predictions since going to jail might be an option now. Also, I am sure those men felt horrible enough knowing that over 300 people died and they could not do anything about
