Kyle Braid Leadership Reflection Paper

There are numerous moments from my childhood that have helped shape my transformation into adulthood. The most of these moments involves my acceptance into my school’s branch of the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation. The J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundations, or JKB, is a program that helps mentor young adults into top leaders in their school and in the larger community. This group is very selective, as only 16 of the top school leaders are chosen each year to be accepted into this prestigious opportunity. Upon learning that I had been chosen as a member of this group, I was excited because I have always heard good things about the group, but did not realize how much of an honor this was until the potential of what I could do was presented …show more content…
This transformation has been a direct result of the many actives and services we do as a group to better our school and our communities. One of the most meaningful activities JKB does is volunteer to teach the horrors of drug use to young elementary kids in an effort educate the younger members of the community. We have also hosted many actives that help the less fortunate, such as PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter). Im PADS we will go to a homeless shelter and help serve food, clean, and help with any other objectives the shelters had for us. It is essentially extra support for the shelters which they always appreciate. We also were given the opportunity to run an event called, PLARN ("yarn" made from plastic shopping bags). PLARN donation fundraiser with the sole purpose of benefitting the homeless population in our neighborhood. At PLARN, we asked students to donate plastic bags that we would then cut and tie into the shapes of mattress, since a place to sleep is something taken for granted by many people. It felt fulfilling to be apart of such a wonderful project, since I know that the work that I put in had a positive impact on someone's

Leadership is vital in any organization, sport, or club. Not everyone is constructed to be a good leader and for some that can be a hard pill to swallow. Lord of the Flies is a book that exemplifies leadership. From the very beginning of the book to the end it seems as if there is an ongoing battle between Jack and Ralph, the two that are looked up to as the “leaders” are in constant disagreement. Through careful delegation, communication, and goal setting Ralph is depicted to be the most effective leader.…

Through our project, we raised awareness of the need in our community and the resources that are there to help, such as the Good Shepherd Center. By our research and service to the community, I believe that we made an impact on some of the women that were recipients of the purses and the effort behind them. I also know that the shelter is appreciative of the service we performed. This project was a blessing to me because it showed me what an impact we can make in our community with something as small as a purse. It’s a reflection of taking something that is simple and making a difference with it.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

After another week of being tormented with exaggerated apologies by my peers for my rejection, I was officially accepted. Being denied helped me realize my true potentials and made me desire to strive to be my utmost best. Not only did I become a member, but I also ultimately became the President of the National Honor Society. I was running against some of the same friends that initially pitied my denial, producing the initial loss to influence me to become a natural helper that desires to help everyone. As President, I became the role model for most students at my school – rising from a loss and returning triumphant as an affable young…

The National Honor Society is an organization that helps guide bright high school students into the right direction in which they have already shown by having an outstanding academic record, excellent attendance, etc. This organization enhances the unique and positive qualities that a person has while teaching them new ones such as responsibility, honesty, and respect. Throughout this year I faced hardships and had an extremely difficult time keeping everything I valued in place. I didn’t accomplish as much as I wish I did this year, but towards the middle/end, this sudden determination and passion started forming within me and my love for learning deepened.…

John Krumboltz’s Happenstance Learning Theory discusses that human behavior is the result of different learning experiences made available by both planned and unplanned situations in which human beings find themselves. Since no one can know in advance the destiny or outcome of an individual’s decision, Krumboltz used the Happenstance Learning Theory as an attempt to explain why individuals follow certain career paths in life and how counselors can use this theory to guide their clients through this process. The Happenstance theory explains that every situation (planned or unplanned) is a potential opportunity for someone, as long as they are open and willing to capitalize on these moments. In my own life, I can look back and see where Happenstance…

In May of 2015 I attended a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) weekend. A few hundred kids from Massachusetts and Rhode Island were selected by their schools as leaders to go to Brewster Sea Camps to learn leadership skills and accept the award. We were split up into our “families” with complete strangers based on color of bandana we received, mine being black. We then broke off for the rest of the weekend and competed family against family in challenges that tested who was and who wasn’t a leader. These challenges also brought us closer together as a “family”.…

There are many moments that have been considered “life changing” in my life, but there is one moment that I would consider pivotal; when I got inducted into the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association (NJSGA) as one of their directors. Being a director means I am responsible for the cattle along with the junior members in the surrounding states. Although being a director is hard work, I enjoy the laughs and good times shared by all. Along with many cattle shows, we also have a lot of meetings to discuss how each district is doing. There are not many people who get a position on the board of directors, and those who do show a large amount of pride and respect for this association.…
