Pro-competition
In the working world people are always striving to be better than their peers to get that promotion or raise. Whether it’s their rival company or their co-workers you are always competing to be better. So is it beneficial to have kids grow up thinking that there will be no competition in the world and they will always get that participation trophy? I think that competition is beneficial because if you do not have competition growing up then you will not be prepared for the real world where competition is everywhere. Certainly, some can argue that competition just builds self-doubt and demoralization. Kohn mention in his article that kids must become the best to succeed, “a child is told that it isn’t enough to be good — he must triumph over others”( Source A). By giving out participation trophies or medals you are making someone feel bad because even though they won everyone else is still getting a medal. Another outcome is that you are letting the team or person who lost get a reward for something that they did not accomplish. Pandel says that “ In the absence of a concrete goal, like winning, a child exhibits greater signs of disengagement and a lack of motivation”(Source B). This could also carry on into an adults life. If as a kid you were given a participation trophy and praise even though you lost, when applying for the University of their choice, you might lose motivation to try hard because you have the mentality that you are still going to get into the university that you wanted. Or to carry this example over to the working world, If you are competing to win over a customer from a bigger company, but you still have the mentality that everyone wins and you do not try your hardest.
