Eve’s side of the story seems to be an excuse to clear her name from persecution. Eve has shown clear resistance to the word of God, however, she does not recognize her own defiance, and attempts to shift the blame onto others. For example, when the serpent spoke to the devil, the serpent shows hesitation in his resistance to God, stating “I fear lest the LORD be wrathful to me” (Kvam, 60). However, the serpent immediately follows the devil once it was reassured that it could deceive Adam. With Adam, the overall circumstance was the same. Adam at first resists the temptation out of his fear of God, but he eventually agrees to eat the fruit without much resistance (Kvam, 62). On the contrary, from Eve’s perspective her encounter with the devil

She believes that accessing knowledge would “render [her] more equal, and perhaps, a thing not undesireable, somtime superior” (9.823-825). It’s not that Eve herself is flawed, it’s that she, like other marginalized bodies, lacks “the qualities or attributes required for a happy state of existence” because of the historical definition of this “happy state” and those who are privy to enjoying it (Ahmed 589). When Raphael warns Adam and Eve of the dangers of disobedience, he says “Warne thy weaker; let it profit thee to have heard by terrible Example the reward of disobedience; firm they might have stood, yet fell” (6.909-912). However, Eve disobeys for the sake of equality. We can reframe this as an obedience to a subversive, radical orientation that attempts to undo inequality.…

Hamilton, in responding Enns’ claim that Pauline Adamic understanding is foreign to the Old Testament, points out that Enns does not take account of the narrative nature of Genesis account in Torah. He argues that the narrative in Genesis shows the consequence of Adam’s sin in a narrative style, and the story of Cain and Abel and the flood should be understood as “the outworking of Adam’s sin” to show the readers that Adam’s sin brought the irreversible consequence of sin into the world. Enns’ hermeneutical weakness is that if the story of Cain and Abel is read independently of the story of Adam’s sin, then the readers are left with the question why Cain is evil and how he came to possess the murderous thought against his brother. Only when…

Works of literature are a reflection of the time period they were written in; they explore the inner workings of the society and examine the most prominent issues of the time. Therefore, as time passes and humanity changes, the issues addressed evolve accordingly, with the exception of one issue, which endured the tests of time and remained one the most recurring themes in literature, the battle between good and evil. The theme made its first appearance in creation stories and while the stories differ between one culture and another, the theme of good and evil remained intact. To illustrate, in the Abrahamic religions’ version, Adam and Eve’s fall from heaven is caused by Satan, the very root of all evil. Centuries later, the battle between good and evil continues to be tirelessly fought whether in literature or other creative mediums.…

In the creation myth “The World on Turtle’s Back” the Iroquois Native Americans describe their beliefs about the creation of the world and humanity. The myth exhibits many archetypal settings and greatly resembles the story of Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis. The differences between the two creation stories’ archetypal settings, however, illustrate the greatest difference between the two cultures; monotheism and polytheism. Both “The World on Turtle’s Back” and the Book of Genesis involve a tree that connects heaven to earth. In the Iroquois story, it is the “Great Tree… [that] had grown there forever….…
