The story of "White Tigers" by Kingston is story written in first person, in which Kingston accompanies a bird who travels up a mountain. Kingston approaches a hut and within the hut are an older couple who offer to provide her with the training necessary to be a warrior. She decides to stay because her parents believe her destiny is to become a warrior. The older people teach her to blend into her environment. At 14, she is blindfolded and instructed to take off into the mountains and perform a test of survival. She runs and runs until she reaches the top of the mountain known as "the tiger place" (Kingston 24). While on this mountain, Kingston becomes ravenous. But then, a white rabbit happens to jump into a fire to satisfy her malnourishment.
