The Icon and the Militant
Since ever, humans differ in their skills, abilities, and talents. These characteristics are what make differences between individuals but also lead to integration between their ideas, creations, and decisions. While some individuals have a talent in sciences and arts, others are talented in sport and business. These are just some examples that show the diversity between humans in life. This diversity of talents does not make just integration between individuals but also creates a competition. There are many movies, documentaries, and programs that study and compare between individuals. King of Kong, a Fistful of Quarters, is a popular documentary that compares between two best Donkey Kong players in The United States

In the documentary, Billy Mitchell sends two individuals to investigate Steve Wiebe’s house, and they steal a part of Steve Wiebe’s Donkey Kong machine. This example shows that Billy Mitchell is a cowardly person. Instead that he calls for a confrontation to prove himself that he is still the best and that the scores that Steve Wiebe reaches are not achieved by a deceptive way, he chooses a cowardly way. In fact, just the idea of sending someone to invade Steve Wiebe house shows that Billy Mitchell is completely wrong no matter how Steve achieves his record. On the other hand, Steve Wiebe is a confrontational person. He calls Billy Mitchell and asks him to challenge each other at the fun spot, a public games area. This is the appropriate way for someone who believes in his ability. Steve Wiebe accepts the challenge that Walter Day wants to organize. Moreover, he tries to put the pressure on Billy Mitchell to convince him to accept the challenge. These all show how Steve Wiebe is confrontational. The respond of Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe differ; while Billy Mitchell does not attend the challenge, Steve Wiebe attends it three times, which shows that he is a challenging …show more content…
In the documentary, Billy Mitchell points out that Steve is the person he is today because he comes under the wrath of Billy Mitchell. This shows that Billy is an arrogant person because the way he speaks to his competitor is not a professional way. Even though Billy Mitchell knows that Steve Wiebe is the winner, he still does not admit it. Also, Billy Mitchell speaks about himself as a great achiever; he gives recognition to himself, and at the same time he does not want to recognize Steve Wiebe achievements. On the contrary, Steve Wiebe is a humble person. In the documentary, Steve accepts to play in a public area against Billy Mitchell even though he knows that Billy may not attend the competition. Also, unlike Billy Mitchell, Steve Wiebe admits that Billy is a skillful person; Steve says that he can handle losing if Billy wants to compete with him, and he says that he is not afraid to lose. All these show that Steve is down-to-earth, and he considers others. He keeps always a smile on his face. All these characteristics make Steve Wiebe a humble and a sociable person who is accepted by almost everyone in the documentary and

The Triumph of the Will, a documentary from 1935 set in Germany, revolutionized cinema when Leni Riefenstahl captured and exalted the fearless Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler and his infamous Nazi party. The film uses powerful imagery of Hitler himself and adoring crowds to emphasize his deity like leadership and the people’s love for him. In a time of insane rule, Riefenstahl’s picture was the propaganda for the Nazis that pushed its ideals through techniques that gave them false hope for the future of Germany in a ruthless and fascist regime. I will endeavor to investigate what techniques such as mise en scène and sound Riefenstahl uses to capitalize on the pathos of the viewer to follow the Nazi regime and their cause. Nazi Germany in 1935 was under the influence of the authoritarian ruler Adolf Hitler.…

There are many conceptual definitions of what it means to be a hero. In one instance, a firefighter can be a hero for saving dozens of individuals from a burning building. In other instances, a hero can be a student sharing notes to another student who was out sick. In The Hero or O Heroi, the hero is Vitorio, a war veteran who lost his leg towards the end of the Angolan Civil War. Directed by Zeze Gamboa, the film follows the lives of Vitorio, Barbara, a prostitute who lost her son when the war started, and Manu, a boy looking for his father.…

The film updates the story with twentieth-century protagonists challenging neo-colonialism. By casting an American Black actor as Idi Amin, the last King raises unsettling issues about Black identity, Afro-Diasporic sentiment, and racial ventriloquism that harks back to Hollywood’s days of Blackface minstrelsy. Racism in Western popular culture has not been uncontested, and in recent years well organized and successful protests have risen up in various forms against corporations, athletic organizations, and other purveyors of racialized popular media, however, for as many successful protests, decades long battles continue today to end the dehumanizing portrayals of marginalized groups in the United States. People begin by focusing on some recent…

In modern day Latin America people struggle for even the most basic of human needs such as water, sanitation, and food. Governments in many countries do little to help lift the people out of poverty and give way to a higher quality of life for the poor while letting companies with vast resources come into their country, take their resources, and in return do little other than pay a meager wage to those who labor for these companies. The systems that are put in place by forced democracy are meant to keep separation between the rich and the poor. Three movies that depict how these systems work, or don’t work, are City of God, Even the Rain, and Trinkets and Beads. These movies have commonalities that the people of Latin America deal with day to day like loyalty, poverty, drug trafficking, slums, and exploitation of the indigenous people.…

If Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) in North by Northwest is noted for his boldness and nonchalance combined with personal charm, Manny Balestrero (Henry Fonda) in The Wrong Man for his humility, calm and composure, then Grace Kelley can be seen as an embodiment of pluck courage and self-confidence at its heroic heights. America is well known for its plucky courage and mettle/fortitude they displayed during the two world wars. Hitchcock could well appreciate it living in Hollywood as a British citizen having his roots in Britain. Hollywood films have exhibited this bravado time and again while projecting the American characters as part of the myth making structure. Small courage usually never finds its way in genre films which included…

During the 1940s and 1950s the threat of communism within the Hollywood film and entertainment industry was greatly overstated. During the time that the House Un-American Activities Committee was active the U.S population was in the midst of a intense anti-communism movement in response to the Cold War. The HUAC with the support of public opinion was able to question almost any individual without negative backlash. This wild questioning of anyone when linked with the close connections between Federal Beau of Investigation and HUAC created what is historically viewed as a ‘witch hunt’ against communists. However, despite the fact that this threat of communist subversion was much overstated there is still some evidence of underhand activities,…

Within a society, “Individuals, classes, nations have been extremely unlike one another; they have struck out a great variety of paths, each leading to something valuable” (Mill 69). With diversity, humans have been able to make many valuable discoveries, whether this be through success or failure.…

I worked five days a week for at least three hours whether it be private lessons at nine at night or open gyms early in the morning. While doing this I managed volunteering at a summer camp five days a weeks from seven in the morning to three in the afternoon.…
