Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality in the world with almost 25% of the deaths resulting from cardiovascular events or strokes. A particularly dangerous form of heart disease is mitral regurgitation (MR) which affects 200,000 people every year in the US alone. The Mitral valve is a key site of failure due to its location between the left atrium and left ventricle, it prevents the backflow of oxygenated blood into the atrium during ventricular systole and constantly experiences high pressures. MR is the backflow of blood into the atrium and pulmonary veins due to the partial or complete mitral valve failure. This failure is rated on a scale from 0 to 4, 4 being severe.…

Synopsis Detection of heart murmur in children is a common occurrence, and is frequently benign. However, concern over serious pathology is a ubiquitous response by parents and guardians and is often not abated until thorough evaluation by a pediatric cardiologist has been performed. Given the frequent delay in assessment by a pediatric cardiologist, the authors performed an observational/interventional study of parents or guardians of otherwise healthy children (n= 258 parents/guardians=178 children) referred for evaluation of murmur designed to measure anxiety level after referral, and whether this anxiety could be reduced by provision of a fact sheet delineating the specifics of heart murmurs in the pediatric population. Mean anxiety levels were measured 2 weeks prior to consultation and 2 weeks after consultation. Prior to consultation, 60% of parents/guardians were determined to have an increased anxiety level as measured by the State Trait Anxiety Index, with a mean score of 34.9, which decreased to 30.9…

On an auditory aspect, these breeds of dogs will often be generally loud breathers. Increased panting, snorting and snoring are a few things most owners experience on a daily basis. Some dogs with more severe forms of Brachycephalic Syndrome will cough and gag. Overheating is a big issue and is caused when the increase of panting swells and narrows the airways even more than they already are which leads to increased anxiety in the dog(CIDD). Excessive heat, exercise and excitement can cause cyanosis and collapse, and dogs that are overweight can exacerbate these issues even more (ACVS).…

The complex narrative structure of The Heart of a Dog, as Schneider rightly observes, can be incorporated into the reading for a ‘range of interpretations’. Building upon his examination of the ‘close association between character and narrative style’, an argument can be brought forward that the novella gives rise to criticism of how the ‘Other’ – in this case, the animal – is treated. It is important to understand how the narrative changes are achieved through the shifting of diegetic level and focalisation. According to Gerard Genette, a narrative theorist, there are three diegetic levels that can be distinguished, with extradiegetic (narration outside text) and intradiegetic (narration within text) being the most pertinent to this discussion.…

The irregularity of the heart in people with CHD is developed from birth though symptoms of the condition may not be present until adulthood. During the time of birth the closure of the ductus arteriosus (DA) should occur about 15 hours after birth though functional closure may be delayed for up to 3 months of life. Thus, an open DA is the functional indicator of congenital heart disease.…
