Kinesics help people establish things like who should be trusted and who should be a leader in society. A study was conducted with 9 boys who all started out equal in the situation given to them. The study was looking for leadership in group decisions, and it found “that in this particular discussion among nine boys two leaders emerged. One leader spoke a great deal and had the highest percentage of initiated conversations. The other leader, however, only originated an average number of conversations but became a leader by virtue of his bodily movements, particularly those of the face and head. That is, he literally directed and to an extent controlled the group by head and facial movements.”(DeVito, 1968).
This research was in 1968 and it still applies today.
