He arrived at home every day with a new story about Charles, the class troublemaker. Charles hit the teacher, said inappropriate words, and kicked his teacher’s friend. Laurie’s problem of having a difficult adjustment to kindergarten was solved when he became the teacher’s helper and, for the most part, stopped misbehaving. This story has quite a surprising ending to it. Over the last few decades, teachers’ roles have evolved with expanded responsibilities, new demands and more accountability, increasing their stress levels (Ransford, Greenberg, Domitrovich, Small, & Jacobson, 2009). Despite the fact that teaching is among one of the most stressful jobs in Australia (SafeWorkAustralia, 2012), there is a growing expectation that teachers should deliver not only the academic curriculum, but also be more involved in implementing practices that promote students’ mental health (Rothi, Leavey, & Best, 2008). They are being asked to perform universal screenings to identify students with mental health problems, refer these students for more intensive supports when needed, deliver social and emotional learning curriculum…

My family and I had to make the hardest decision if I were to stay home schooled, or go to public school. I really wanted to go to public school, but a small part of me wanted to stay home schooled because I thought I wasn't ready to bring on that big of a challenge. Big school with lots of kids, teachers, rooms, and lockers are all different and new for me. Lockers is the biggest one for me because I have never ever in my life had a locker before. Friends is another one because I know a lot of people that go to Foothills, but I knew there will be pumps along the way.…

We provided vision screenings to four year olds at a public Pre-K. We had the children sit in a chair at a distance of ten feet from the Snellen chart. We pointed at pictures and asked the child to identify a house, apple, and umbrella. Some children were nervous and very quiet, so we had them point to paper we had with pictures of a house, an apple, and an umbrella. Each child was given a fun pair of glasses with one eye covered.…

In 1821, Boston English High School opened it’s doors and became the first public high school ever. When it first opened it had an enrollment of 101 boys and no female students. It was placed on the corner of Derne Street and Temple Street, in Boston Massachusetts. It was a school opened for boys who did not plan to attend Harvard or could not afford it. I think that this school opening played a key role in educational history because public schools today give all kinds of students the opportunity to learn just as this one did.…
