The death of Kim Jonghyun was an event unexpected by anyone.
Confirmed on the 18th of December, he was previously found in an apartment unconscious. Reports confirmed its source as a coal briquette, which caused carbon monoxide poisoning in his lungs. After several attempts of oxygen therapy, Kim Jonghyun sorrowfully passed that night. How much had he suffered before that night?
Kim Jonghyun notable lead the hyper-popular Korean boy group known as SHINee. Debuting in 2008 with their EP replay under SM Entertainment, SHINee had risen to record-setting fame for years to come. Conforming to an extremely conservative society, suicide is seen as a taboo topic. Expectedly, the main belief upheld closes itself towards mental illness. South Korea ranks tenth on the World Health Organization’s Suicide Rates list-- not to mention, suicide rates experience a surge after the death of celebrities. Over ninety percent could me diagnosed with a mental disorder, however only fifteen percent of the population actually receives the treatment needed.
