The Taming of the Shrew does not present major events such as Petruchio and Katherine's wedding or their travels home to Petruchio's estates. Characters fill in the missing events by relaying this information to each other through conversation. Before this happens, however, the audience members gain an element of mystery as well as humor as they try to imagine how the scene would have played out. Shakespeare intends for the audience members to find amusement as they imagine the scene in their own way. The absence of important events in the play brings humor and…

Contrasting this, in The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio and Katherine have no choice but to stay together. It may be argued that by the end of The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio and Katherine have developed feelings for one another; yet, despite this, they stay together because the ties of marriage bind them. If given the opportunity to dissolve their union with no monetary or social consequences—the same opportunity that faces Patrick and Kat—it would be feasible that they would separate. This differs from the end of Ten Things I Hate About You where Patrick and Kat reconcile, clearly choosing to remain a couple as they deeply care for one another, not because they stand to gain anything from reconciling. They are not legally bound to one another, nor do they financially support each other—it is their choice to stay together due to their mutual affection.…

Eric Minton’s thesis is accurate in his essay “Who is the Misogynist Monster: Petruchio, Shakespeare, or You?” because it mentions Taming of the Shrew as not being misogynist, and Petruchio and Kate having a stable relationship. Minton indicates that the play is not misogynist because of how Kate is able to be assertive and insulting. In Taming of the Shrew, Katherine says, “If I be waspish, best beware my sting” (II.i.208). Katherine is insulting Petruchio in this scene and shows how Shakespeare did not play her as a damsel in distress but as a strong, independent woman.…

Previously, I stated that Petruchio only tames Kate to an extent, because her free will remains intact enough for her to decide to play the submissive wife role. However, one cannot deny the transformation Kate has gone through physically as she is starved and poorly clothed and mentally as Petruchio's thoughts dictate her words. In the beginning, Kate the shrew uses her language to sting like a bee: “If I be waspish, best beware my sting” (2.1.213). But by the end, Kate's words do not sting but soothe as they flow with the status quo: “Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head, thy sovereign: one that cares for thee” (5.1.158-159). Kate has not been molded into submission, but broken.…

There is no denying just how powerful love is and in the “The Taming of the Shrew” we follow two characters, Bianca and Katherina, to see how marriage has an affect on their lives and personalities. In the beginning of the play Katherina displays characteristics of being a poor stereotype such as being ACRIMONIOUS, IGNOBLE, and INTEMPERABLE. There is a strong DISSENSION within the audience if Kat is simply playing Petruchio by letting him think he's in control of her or if she is truly broken. But in the end one can see how much her personality is changed by one man in her life, Petruchio. Before Kat meets him she isn’t loved or even liked by anyone in the book, not even her own sister.…

To him Kate is just a hindrance in getting the one thing that he wants more than anything; money. Petruchio is not afraid to hurt those weaker than him and he does this with his servant Grumio. He does not treat Grumio well in any way.…

If her extended speech was given as an ironic statement, it is conceivable that Petruchio was involved in the delivering of the speech. Petruchio’s involvement could have been the reason why he is so ready to wager the amount of his original dowery. Happiness is the ultimate goal in life for many people. It is a sign of success and prosperity which are qualities that society pressures everyone to achieve. But how does one obtain authentic well-being in confining situations? In his play, A Doll’s House, Henrik Ibsen demonstrates that if an individual lives in restrictive circumstances that force them to conform to a superior’s desires, they must mature and pursue genuine happiness in order to gain freedom and discover their identity. Nora, the protagonist, is a young woman who secretly breaks the law to save her husband’s life even though he treats her like a child.…

In Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”, Petruchio’s method for “taming” Kate is described throughtout the play either in a very subtle way that Kate doesn’t notice, or in a directly to Kate to show his intentions with her. Kate is aware of his goal to tame her, but she didn’t see how and when he started taming her. As Petruchio starts his “taming” process, he slowly accomplishes his goal by using humiliation, starvationa and fatigue, and acting more shrewish than Kate is. The first thing Petruchio decides to do is responding to Kate’s shrewness as friendliness and compliment about her. He talks to himself, ”Say that she rail; why, then I’ll tell her plain She sings as sweetly as a nightingale:”(II.i.172-173)…

Kate’s development over the course of the play is basically determined by her gradual adaptation to her new social role as wife. She complies with Petruchio’s humiliating regimen of taming because she knows on some level that, whether she likes the role of wife or not, she will be happier accepting her social obligations than living as she has been at odds with everyone connected to her. In fact, the primary excitement in The Taming of the Shrew stems from its permeable social boundaries, crisscrossed continually by those who employ a disguise or a clever lie. In the end, however, the conventional order reestablishes itself, and those characters who harmonize with that order achieve personal…
