Kate doesn't see her treatment as abuse and instead appreciates Petruchio as her husband. Kate wants to reciprocate Petruchio's act of taking her in and caring for her, which explains her submissive nature. Katherine does't show respect as a sign of subordinance, but because she personally wants to make her husband happy.
