In researching information about Karnak, a city complex in Egypt, I continued to ask myself what Karnak is, who built it and when , and why was it built. I would like to share my findings with you.
What was Karnak?
Karnak was a city with many temples built over 2000 years dedicated to the Theban triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. And was also known as “The most selected place” by the ancient
Egyptians. It was also the largest religious building complex covering about 200 acres which included houses, temples, lakes, and sacred buildings. The sacred enclosure of Amun was probably the biggest temple in Karnak, it covered 61 acres alone and can hold 10 of the average size European Cathedrals inside of it. The reason they got destroyed is because one they had invaders and battles, the second reason is toward the end of
Karnak christianity started to become a major religion and people started to not like the temples and monuments so they got angry and destroyed them.
Why did they build it?
The reason they started building temples is because they felt like god Amun sent them to that specific area and they felt like they needed to thank him for putting them there. So to do that they built temples and dedicated them to him. They also built some of the temples for a place to go and worship Amun. Then after awhile the rulers didn't really care about Amun they just wanted to make a name for themselves and so the people how powerful he is. After awhile the people started to catch on, especially when a king decide to tear down one of the smaller temples for Amun just to build his hall so he could be remembered. This caused the people to get angry and rally against them, after this happened the kings began to tell the people the temples were
