The head mistress discloses that the Gallery was in fact used to see if the clones had souls at all. The audience is put in an uncomfortable perspective of a society that does not view these human beings as actual people.
Repressive State Apparatus
• While at Hailsham, Ruth, Tommy, Kathy, and the rest of the students are informed of their fate. Miss Lucy lets them know the truth, by explaining that they only exist as organ donors for transplants and that they will “complete” in their early adulthood. She is then immediately let go by the headmistress. The audience is left with an abundance of questions at this point. The only real revelation is that Miss Lucy was sacked, because she looked at the clones with a sense of compassion and humanity. This does not fit into the ideals of a world that just wants to harvest the organs of people for self-preservation.
