The fame of this family emerged when Kim Kardashian, an American television and social media personality and the second born of the family, released a sex tape with a famous rapper by the name of Ray J. She instantly gained fame due to how fast the tape went viral. The public believes she leaked the video for this purpose and it worked. The tape endorsed Ray J as a rapper whether in a negative way or a positive way, people who didn’t know who Ray J was suddenly wanted to know him. He got more views on his YouTube channel. The adult film industry offered to pay the millions of dollars just to have the short clip on their website. Today the Kardashian family has become a very big and important brand. They family has their own reality TV programme, they own a clothing line for both females and children, they have a make-up line and a day doesn’t go by without the Kardashian family making headlines on social media. Despite all these, they have all appeared in different TV commercials promoting Sketcher, energy drinks, T-Mobile. They are also involved in a lot of Anti-bullying campaigns amongst other things. Celebrity news should not just be seen in relation to their commercial aspect but also for their socio-cultural aspect. The production of a public personality and the reporting about them has a dual aspect: it combines commercial interests with audience desires. (2000: 11) But what this also means is that the media’s function is changing: from information provider to participant in the cultural construction of social identity.
