Origin of Kanban
Kanban is signboard or billboard in Japanese, an effective tool to manage the production system, Kanban was made from plastic or thick paper, it listed material code, production code, destination to be transport, origin issued code etc., representing the message of : when, what, quantity to produce, how to produce and transport. It was a concept borrowed and developed from Supermarket inventory management, the idea behind supermarket inventory management is simply: The customer can get the right quantity of goods at the right time. To increase the ease of buying merchandise and refilling the inventory after the transaction with customers, supermarkets label and classify their goods …show more content…
In contrast, Kanban system is using the ‘pull system’ as a basic principle, which the downstream processes bring the exact goods and materials from upstream processes only when they are needed. In short, ‘push system’ make all they can, for just in case, while ‘pull system’ make what is needed when they need it.
The biggest difference between the push system and pull system is the way information relates to actual goods and material and how they react to the changing conditions. For push system, firstly, the system handle with general production-related information, and as a result occurs production flow in order to obstinately fulfill the original production schedule with careless to downstream. In contrast, the pull system deals with process-specific information and the transfer of goods, hence it is easier for changing conditions in downstream processes to affect upstream process. In conclude, the pull system of Kanban system could have better respond to customer demand than conventional production system (push system) and as a result increase the efficiently of supply …show more content…
3: Send only 100% defect-free products
Quality is built in at each process, means that quality may change at each process, the upstream should never send any defective goods downstream. Defected product may create confusion at downstream and conceals problems at the defect-producing process, finally, it may bring disorder to the entire factory.
4: Establish level production
It is a method that eliminates variation in flow at different processes and help maintaining stable and smooth production, also a thorough balance of product models and volumes within the production schedule.
